Dr. Knop Talks Astronomy
Title: Superluminal Jets in Quasars
Date: Saturday, June 27, 2009
Time: 10:00 AM Pacific Time (SL Time)
Location: The large amphitheater on the sim named StellaNova
SLURL: http://slurl.com/secondlife/StellaNova/213/210/32/
Abstract:
Special Relativity -- an extremely well-verified theory -- tells us that nothing can move faster than the speed of light. Yet, we observe jets coming out of distant active galactic nuclei that appear to be moving faster than the speed of light. What's up with that? In this talk, I'll describe why it is that they appear to be moving faster than the speed of light, how that can happen without violating Relativity, and talk a bit more about this highly energetic jets of plasma we see emerging from distant galaxies.
This science talk is intended for the general public. All are welcome. It's part of a series of popular talks called Dr. Knop Talks Astronomy. Dr. Knop was on one of the teams that discovered the accelerating expansion of the universe.
Feel free to ask questions or make comments.

The SD2 project showing is a collaborative work in progress by colleagues from Coventry University, UniSA (Adelaide) and Kansas University
The work is exploring the possibilities of live/ real/virtual and telematic performance. For those attending the physical space performance, it will take place in the Ellen Terry Theatre at Coventry University.
For those attending virtualy it will take place in the blackbox theatre space above the sandbox on Coventry University Island in Secondlife (teleport to the island and click on the red teleport buttons, the first will take you to the sandbox, the 2nd from there into the performance space. It wil also be streamed via
http://www.ustream.tv/channel/virtaul-world-experiment
and it is recommended that those inworld open this in a browser window alongside SL.
In the virtual Ellen Terry building and the black box space on Coventry University Island there will an archive of video clips showing elements of the process and previous showings.
For those inworld please click on the boxes to receive an outfit (a white tailcoat) some animations and a beachball. You may chose to wear your own attire but please make it as light as possible so that it can be seen when projected in the real space.
Please make your way to the central carpet area and use your camera to view the action at various points around the box as well as on the video stream. You may well be asked to join in at the end.
The initial showing wil last aout 10 minutes after which there will be an explanation of the technical set up , a chance for questions and more importantly a chance to play and interact with the audience/participants in the real space.
Join Beth and Chris, NMC's master builders for a monthly tour of interesting SL places to explore how they were built. For more information: http://virtualworlds.nmc.org/2009/06/23/vwex-yale/

Religion in Virtual Worlds Study Group
The Religion in Virtual Worlds Study Group meets on the 3rd Friday of the month at 8:00 AM Second Life time. (For our members in Hawaii , we will discuss moving the time.)
The June meeting will take place on June 19th. The agenda is as follows:
Buddhist Death in Second Life
Dr. Beth Davies-Stofka describes the progress made on the Second Life Bardo Game. It's ready for student testing, and we'll demo the game for the group.
Designed by members of the Center for EduPunx, the Second Life Bardo Game creates the "in between" state of the dead person as described in the Tibetan Book of the Dead, challenging the player to find her way to enlightenment.
Discussion: does it work? What did you learn?
Business Meeting
Set the agenda for the July meeting. Set a time.
We have some tentative ideas for our July meeting, and are looking forward to hearing about how group members are using Second Life for teaching and/or research. We'd also like to discuss how we might tie our work into the work of the Virtual Worlds Assessment Group, which is creating strategies for assessing the pedagogical value of Second Life and other Virtual Worlds.
Religion in Virtual Worlds Study Group meetings normally last an hour and a half, but feel free to come late and leave early!
All are welcome. All meetings are held on the Front Range Island . Front Range Island is private, so please RSVP in advance with your avatar name to beth.davies@frontrange.edu.
If you have sent in an RSVP before, or have attended a meeting already, you shouldn't need to RSVP. The meeting will be held at the following location:
Please verify in advance that you can teleport to the meeting location.
Thanks, and we look forward to seeing you on June 19th!

Health Care New Media Marketing Conference: Connecting to Consumer's
in Today's Healthcare Environment
Second Life: The Key to Futuristic Communication and Patient Care
Health Care Collaboration & Community in Virtual Worlds & Second Life
Second only to the general concept of Web 2.0, virtual worlds are the
source of more articles in PubMed than any other emerging social
technology. Of the many virtual worlds, Second Life (a free, open
source 3d virtual world platform) is the one with the strongest
presence in health care communities, from patient groups and medical
education to research and professional meetings. Second Life can
enable health systems to create either public or secure private spaces
for functions from patient education, outreach, staff training, remote
meetings, or more. As with any social technology, understanding the
context and norms of the online space are essential to making
institutional engagement a success. In this session, we will look at
case studies illustrating how some organizations have used Second Life
for communication, collaboration and community engagement.
Perplexity Peccable, also known as Patricia Anderson, is the Emerging
Technologies Librarian for the Health Sciences at the University of
Michigan, focusing on social technologies and Science 2.0. In this
role she serves as the community manager for Wolverine Island, the
University's home in Second Life. Ms. Anderson is also the senior
author of the Medical Library Association Encyclopedic Guide to
Searching and Finding Health Information on the Web, with significant
expertise in systematic review methodologies.

Nothing super special here, but I wanted to open an invitation to anyone who might be interested in talking a bit about how we all orient new people to SL and the virtual environment. After 5 years in-world and completing my PhD research on the topic, I've spent the past two years developing and offering a learning community based orientation experience called the SLemester Experience that is having some very positive response. After two years, one hundred percent of those going through the orientation are still active in SL, most of them VERY active.
I'm not selling anything and have no soapbox...but want to invite any who would want to hear what we're doing, and talk about the other issues we all see surrounding effective orientation and enculturation activities.
This will be our first ImagiLearning TGIF Cruise this coming Friday, 6/19 at 5pm SLT. If you are interested, just drop me an email or IM me in-world and I'll see that you have a spot. Space is open until it's full....
We'll either be meeting on our new cruise ship, the "ISS Just Imagine", or at the infamous North Beach Tiki Bar....it all depends on the mood at the time....
